One of the problems we have to deal with in the classroom (in the best and worst contexts) is distraction. The distraction will be present because, mainly it is part of our nature. Then we have different cases of distraction caused by, some disorder,
student discomfort, group membership, mistaken teacher dynamics, family
conflicts and many more things that affect our kids, our students.
In the classroom the question is: HOW to solve those problems? If
I say "only reduce distractions and create a harmonious environment
that students recognize", you will say "as if it were so easy". It is not easy, but even if it sounds too optimistic is the best and another important point is "contextualize". Do not talk about a TV show to a child who has no television. When talking about distractions, what do you think is one of the best ways to keep attention? ... Making them participate!
The best way to involve our students is through play. The games act as a support tool during the learning and the assimilation of the contents. It is one of the best ways to focus our students on content. Thus, the teachers achieve an educational and practical experience, which also allows us to use ICT. When presenting the instructions, convey the content in an introductory, simple and as fluid as you can (remember that working with children makes it even harder to keep their attention).
Recall that not avoiding distractions, trying to focus just on the contents and not in our dynamics, there are high probabilities that the child get frustrated. Because that child will never be able to exchange and appropriate content. There is also the option to explain to the child why it is so important to stay focused, or why it is remarkable that s/he knows the topic in question.
Nice post! I'm a big fan of games in the classroom. I think students nowadays need interactivity, participation, action and they need to feel they are in control. Games are great for that ;)
ResponderEliminarHi Caro! Thanks for your comment. Yes, I'm totally agree with you. These are very practical and efficient. During the last week I also noted the utility and efficiency of music (it is really important too). So probably I'll be sharing some games and ideas about how work with songs.
